Managing speaking time

Frequently asked questions

How do I use it during an event?

Open the page on a laptop or tablet facing the speaker (a stage monitor), pick the length, go full screen with the F key, then start with the space bar when the talk begins. The digits fill the screen so they can be read from a distance.

Why 18 minutes?

It is the maximum length of a TED or TEDx talk: long enough to develop an idea, short enough to keep the room’s attention. The 3, 5, 10 and 20-minute presets cover pitches, short talks and standard conference slots.

Will the screen go to sleep?

Not on recent browsers: while the timer runs, the page asks the device to keep the screen on (Wake Lock). To be safe, plug the device in for long sessions.

What happens when time runs out?

The background stays red and the timer shows the overrun (+0:45, for example), so the speaker knows how far over they are. Timing stays accurate even if the tab goes to the background.
