What is a HEIC file?

It is the default photo format on iPhones since 2017. It takes up less space than JPG, but many apps, websites and Windows computers can’t open it.

Is the photo quality preserved?

With quality set to 90% (the default), the difference is invisible to the naked eye. Choose PNG if you want a completely lossless conversion, but the file will be larger.

How do I stop my iPhone from taking HEIC photos?

Go to Settings › Camera › Formats and choose “Most Compatible”. Your next photos will be saved as JPG.
